Matt Jones

Bio

Matt Jones is entering his third season at Union as Defensive Coordinator and brings 25 years of coaching experience. A Portland native and Central Catholic graduate, Matt went on to play at the University of Washington, where he was part of three Rose Bowl teams, the 1991 National Championship team, earned All-Pac-10 honors, and served as team captain before continuing on to play professionally.

His coaching career has included stops in Washington, Norway, Central Catholic, and now Union. At Central Catholic, Matt was part of five Oregon 6A state championship teams and a long run of Mount Hood Conference titles.

For Matt, coaching is about much more than football. He wants athletes to leave with life skills that help them become better citizens, family members, teammates, and leaders. He values dedication and credits the coaches in his own life, especially Steve Halligan at Central Catholic, with shaping the way he coaches today.

One of Matt’s favorite football memories is getting the chance to play at Washington with both of his brothers. On game day, he prepares by listening to music, visualizing, and mentally working through possible game scenarios and calls.
